perf: memoize locale directory listings, resource file lookups and vocabularies - #704
Conversation
A skill resolves its resources once per (language, resource type) and once per resource file. Each resolution listed every subdirectory of locale/ and language-matched each one, and every intent, vocab and dialog file was found with its own os.walk of the language directory. On a hub serving 11 languages with skills that ship ~65 locales, that was 26% of the skill loader's wall time (py-spy on a real 18-skill boot; On This Day spent 70% of its load there). Package directories do not change while they are installed, and a reinstall replaces them, so the listings and per-directory file indexes are memoized on (path, inode, mtime), and language matches are lru-cached. The user override directory is still walked on every lookup. When several subdirectories hold the same file name, the index keeps the one the walk reached last, which is what the old loop returned. SkillResources._locale_vocabularies() walked the vocabulary tree and read and expanded every .voc file again for each .intent and .blacklist the skill loaded; on an 11-language runtime it was the largest single cost left in skill loading (py-spy). The map is now memoized per (directory, inode, mtime) of the package directories and handed out as a copy; when a user override directory exists nothing is cached, since that one can change at runtime. The file index and the vocabulary memo were reused while the root directory's identity was unchanged, but a directory's mtime only moves for entries added, removed or renamed in that directory itself: a file added in a subdirectory, or a .voc edited in place, left them stale. Both caches now record the identity of every directory they walked, and the vocabulary memo also each .voc it read (inode, mtime, size); a cached result is reused only while all of them still match, which costs one stat per entry instead of a walk and a re-read. Tests cover a file added in a subdirectory and a vocabulary edited in place. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

#414 this PR is targeting code marked for deprecation doesn't hurt, but half pointless |
|
Thanks for merging, and noted on #414. Any further work on resource loading will go to the non-deprecated path rather than this one. |
Skill resource lookup repeated the same filesystem work on every call, and the cost grows with the number of locales a skill ships times the number of languages the runtime serves. On a hub serving 11 languages with skills shipping about 65 locales, py-spy on a real 18-skill boot put resource lookup at 26% of the skill loader's wall time. On This Day spent 70% of its own load there.
Three repeated costs, each memoized:
match_lang_directorieslisted every subdirectory oflocale/and language-matched each one, for every (language, resource type). Listings are memoized on (path, inode, mtime), andlang_matches/lang_distanceresults are lru-cached.ResourceFile._locateran anos.walkof the language directory for every intent, vocab and dialog file. It now looks the name up in a per-directory file index, memoized the same way. When several subdirectories hold the same name, the index keeps the one the walk reached last, which is what the old loop returned. The user override directory is still walked on every lookup.SkillResources._locale_vocabularieswalked the vocabulary tree and read and expanded every.vocagain for each.intentand.blacklistthe skill loaded. It is now kept per directory identity and handed out as a copy. Nothing is cached when a user override directory exists.Package directories do not change while installed, and a reinstall replaces them with a new inode and mtime.
Measured on that runtime with a local harness (the hub's own venv, 11 languages), cumulative on top of OpenVoiceOS/ovos-bus-client#386:
Tests:
test/unittests/test_resource_lookup_cache.pycovers equivalence with the uncached result, reuse, a new language directory being picked up, one walk per directory, and the vocabulary memo with its user-directory bypass. The full unit suite passes (768).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
