Closes #542

What

The admin's sidebar menu now comes from godmin 0.25.0. The admin's own copy of the menu, its row styles and its scrollbar rules are gone.

  • Each row draws the icon WordPress draws for it. Posts and every type a site adds use the Posts icon. Pages, Categories, Media, Users and Settings use WordPress's own. Themes uses the Appearance brush, Language uses language, Content Types uses customPostType and Field Groups uses list.
  • The site name is the title at the top of the sidebar. The account panel and the version sit in a footer under the menu and no longer scroll with it.
  • A screen starts loading when the pointer rests on its link. The loading screen between screens is gone. The old screen stays until the new one is ready.
  • Each page title is now a level two heading. The site name in the sidebar is the only level one heading. The editor keeps its own title.
  • On a phone the menu opens in a drawer. A tap beside it or Escape closes it.
  • The menu labels have their own translation context, so a menu row can be translated apart from a page title.
  • react-auth 0.15.0 draws the Users row with WordPress's people icon.
  • The plugin SDK passes on NavigationScreen, NavigationList, NavigationItem, DrilldownItem and MenuCount, so a plugin can open its own sub menu. It also passes on seven more WordPress icons. renderPluginAt now mounts a plugin inside the real sidebar.

Plugin authors: replace NavItem with MenuItem from @gophenberg/frontend-sdk. There is no alias. The plugin SDK page lists two smaller steps, one for a sub menu and one for tests.

One commit is a refactor with no change in behaviour: it splits the field group overlap walk and a theme test helper.

Why

The admin drew its menu with its own rows, styles and scrollbar rules. Every content type shared one hand drawn icon. godmin now holds one copy of the sidebar, so a fix there reaches every admin built on it. The measures, icons and motion follow WordPress's Site Editor. One level one heading per page helps screen reader users find their way.

Testing Instructions

  1. Open the admin at desktop width. Check the site name as the sidebar title, the WordPress icon on each row, and the account panel and version at the bottom.
  2. Rest the pointer on Settings, then click it. The page changes with no loading screen in between.
  3. Make the window phone sized and open the menu. Tap beside the drawer. Open it again and press Escape. Each time the drawer closes and the page stays.
  4. Switch the admin to Spanish under Language. The rows read Medios, Temas, Tipos de contenido, Grupos de campos, Usuarios, Idioma and Ajustes.

📝 Walkthrough

The admin replaces its local rail and menu with shared sidebar navigation. Built-in and plugin menu entries use updated SDK types and icons. The change also updates default-route handling, page heading levels, plugin submenu behavior, and related documentation.

Changes: Admin Navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Menu contracts, entries, and icons
sdk/frontend/index.ts, sdk/frontend/package.json, sdk/frontend/test/*, frontend/src/content/nav.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/nav.tsx, frontend/src/media/nav.tsx, frontend/src/settings/nav.tsx, frontend/src/themes/nav.tsx, frontend/src/menu/coreNav.tsx, frontend/src/test/navigation-items.test.tsx, frontend/src/menu/test/navLabels.test.tsx, languages/*, docs/src/content/docs/contributing/add-a-translatable-string.md
The SDK exports MenuItem, navigation components, and WordPress icon aliases. Built-in entries use the shared type and icons, contextual labels, and content-type-specific glyphs. Catalogs and tests cover these entries.
Sidebar and plugin submenu integration
frontend/src/Layout.tsx, frontend/src/RailContent.tsx, frontend/src/menu/MainMenu.tsx, frontend/src/index.css, sdk/frontend/testing.tsx, sdk/frontend/test/testing.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/drilldown.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/sectionPlugin.tsx, frontend/src/test/small-shell.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/version-display.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/content-nav.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/posts-section.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/editor-route.test.tsx, test/e2e/tests/shell.spec.ts, test/e2e/tests/roles.spec.ts, docs/src/content/docs/extending/the-plugin-sdk.md
Layout renders shared Navigation in Frame.Sidebar, combines navigation entries, and places the account panel and version in the footer. Plugin tests cover capability-filtered rows, Back navigation, focus, and mobile drawer behavior.
Default route and screen loading
frontend/src/content/nav.tsx, frontend/src/router.tsx, frontend/src/test/route-preload.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/route-pending.test.tsx, frontend/src/test/router.test.tsx, frontend/vite.config.ts
DefaultList uses useDefaultType to redirect, show an error, or display loading state. Router options use routerDefaults; tests cover intent preloading and navigation during a delayed screen import.
Page heading hierarchy
frontend/src/content/*Screen.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/LanguageScreen.tsx, frontend/src/media/MediaScreen.tsx, frontend/src/settings/SettingsScreen.tsx, frontend/src/themes/ThemesScreen.tsx, frontend/src/users/*Screen.tsx, frontend/src/test/*, test/e2e/tests/*
Admin screen titles use heading level two. Tests check the sidebar title at level one and screen titles at level two.

Content Screen Adjustments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Field group overlap calculation
frontend/src/content/GroupsScreen.tsx
Overlap detection records repeated field keys against the first group in listing order.
Field query breakpoint
frontend/src/content/fields.tsx
The query maximum width now derives from HUGE_BREAKPOINT.

Explanation

Issue #542 is directly linked and remains open. The PR moves the layout to Frame.Sidebar and Navigation in frontend/src/Layout.tsx. It removes the local menu and rail styles. frontend/src/content/nav.tsx uses WordPress icons and uses the Posts icon for other content types. The layout provides the site heading and footer. Router changes preload on intent and remove the pending screen. Page screens use level-two headings. sdk/frontend/index.ts replaces NavItem with MenuItem and exports the navigation types and icons. Tests cover icons, footer placement, headings, route preloading, and plugin navigation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes stay connected to the sidebar migration in #542. Layout, navigation, icon, heading, router, SDK, translation, documentation, and test changes implement or verify the requested behavior. The mobile drawer and plugin submenu changes support the new shared Godmin navigation. The field-group walk and theme test-helper changes are documented as behavior-preserving refactors. No unrelated feature change is demonstrated.

🔴 High risk · Replacing the plugin SDK’s NavItem with MenuItem without an alias could break existing plugins’ navigation builds until they migrate.

Replaces the admin's own sidebar with godmin 0.25.0's shared sidebar, adding WordPress-style icons, a footer for account and version, hover prefetch for screens, a phone drawer, and level two page titles. No issues found.
