Owner

P5 of the server plan. The second engine and the empty providers are gone, so the event-driven runtime is the only pricing path. The production profile can now start, under explicit conditions.

Owner decisions (2026-10-23):

  • D22: the Live quote source travels in RuntimeInput::Live(Arc<dyn QuoteSource>), just as Replay carries its own source. MarketDataProvider and EmptyQuoteSource are deleted, so the builder cannot be handed an empty provider.
  • D23: Production has Live semantics. Live valuations stay display-only (D5a). Official durable results are core-workflow snapshot runs, which are already in redb.
  • D24: the gate is proven by refusal tests and an application_path test that reaches the identity probe. No in-process HTTPS fixture and no new dependencies.
  • D25: one PR.

Removed

convex-engine

  • scheduler.rs (EodScheduler, IntervalScheduler, ThrottleManager, ...) and market_data_listener.rs (MarketDataListener, MarketDataPublisher, update types), along with their in-file tests. Nothing outside those two files used them.
  • PricingEngine::{on_quote_update, on_curve_update, on_index_fixing, on_inflation_fixing, on_fx_rate_update, register_bond, register_etf_inav, register_etf_nav, register_portfolio} and PricingEngine::reference_data().
  • commit_reference no longer walks the graph to invalidate nodes. Only register_* created those nodes, so the loop could no longer fire.
  • The builder loses with_market_data and with_reference_data, and PricingEngine::new becomes new(config, storage).
  • calc_graph stays: the runtime uses its ticket API.

convex-ports

  • MarketDataProvider, ReferenceDataProvider, and the source traits that no longer had an implementation: CurveInputSource, IndexFixingSource, VolatilitySource, FxRateSource, InflationFixingSource, EtfQuoteSource, IssuerReferenceSource, RatingSource and EtfHoldingsSource.
  • The types only those traits used: curve inputs, fixings, vol surfaces, FX, issuer and rating records, EtfQuote, EtfHoldingsReceiver, and the unused BondQuote/CurveData pricing views.
  • Kept, because live code uses them: QuoteSource, QuoteEventSource, StreamReceiver, RawQuote, BondReferenceData, IssuerType, EtfHoldings.

convex-ext-file

  • Every Empty*Source.
  • CsvQuoteSource, JsonCurveInputSource and CsvIndexFixingSource; nothing composed them.
  • create_file_market_data and create_empty_reference_data.
  • tests/market_snapshots.rs, which tested only those sources.
  • csv, tokio and rust_decimal are removed from [dependencies]; tokio stays a dev-dependency.
  • Replay, fixings, reference import and the snapshot/result file adapters are unchanged.

Call sites: the composition root, plus 12 engine and server test files that wired the empty providers. The three engine Live tests pass their subscription source in RuntimeInput::Live(..).

Production profile

validate_startup no longer refuses production outright. Production runs the Live runtime and starts only when all of these hold:

  • a stored activated configuration_id. A runtime_plan file is refused, because it is replay or local-live input.
  • access.mode = required, with a policy file and introspection (already enforced for required mode).
  • access.tls_boundary = proxy. The HTTP loopback identity-fixture exception stays local-only.
  • a loopback bind, already enforced: TLS terminates at the external proxy.

Each missing condition fails with its own error before storage opens. With no settings, the default profile is still production, and it now fails with INVALID_CONFIG_VALUE: configuration_id requires a stored activated configuration in production. checked() maps production to Live mode. No demo labelling applies, and the publisher stays display-only (D23).

Fly is unaffected: the showcase runs the demo profile.

Tests

  • config.rs: new production_needs_a_stored_configuration_required_access_and_the_tls_proxy walks each refusal in order, then the plan-file, HTTP-introspection and non-loopback refusals, and two successful validations. The default-profile assertion now expects the configuration_id error.
  • application_path: new production_clears_every_gate_and_stops_only_at_the_identity_probe.
    • It composes a production configuration with required access and the proxy boundary through the real compose.
    • Introspection points at the access fixture over https://. The fixture only speaks HTTP, so startup fails with ACCESS_UNAVAILABLE at the probe.
    • The fixture records zero requests, so no credential is sent over plain HTTP, and the database file is never created.
    • An in-process HTTPS identity fixture would need a CA setting and new dependencies (D24). The Live composition that production shares is covered end to end by compiled_live_configuration_prices_posted_quotes_and_restarts_fresh.
  • startup_configuration_tests: the production-default process test now asserts the new message and is renamed production_default_and_override_refuse_without_a_stored_configuration.
  • Engine runtime.rs: empty_providers_need_explicit_demo... is renamed an_engine_without_a_runtime_needs_explicit_demo_and_is_never_ready. It is otherwise unchanged.

Docs

  • RUNTIME.md (Live input row) and the stale storage.rs comment.
  • Server README: profile, configuration and production text.
  • ACCESS.md: production now requires the access boundary.
  • convex-ext-file/README.md: the listener paragraph and the "Snapshot file migration" section (CSV quote, JSON curve, CSV fixing) are replaced by a short "removed" note. SNAPSHOTS.md drops the fixing-CSV paragraph.
  • tools/library/library-inventory.json: the deleted listener is removed from inspected_sources, and inventory_version goes from 157 to 158.

Verification

Run in WSL (Linux) unless noted:

  • cargo fmt --all --check: clean.
  • python3 tools/assurance/check.py --base 82018b08, the way CI runs it: passed, both before and after the doc edits.
  • cargo clippy --locked -p convex-ports -p convex-ext-file -p convex-ext-redb -p convex-engine -p convex-server --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo test --locked --no-fail-fast:
    • convex-ports, convex-ext-file, convex-ext-redb: all pass.
    • convex-engine, the whole suite: all pass.
    • convex-server: everything passes except books.rs. In the full run, 6 of its 8 tests failed with UNKNOWN_INSTRUMENT … no instrument at lookup time. Alone, it then passed 5 of 5. The WSL clock was about 1.6 s behind Windows at the time. This is the known clock-step flake: a reference's recorded_at runs ahead of the lookup time. It now shows up in books.rs as well.
    • application_path: 6 of 6 on Linux, including the new production test and the Linux-only demo showcase test.
  • The CI Test job's core scripts against the built server: tools/core_workflow.py, core_snapshot_workflow.py and core_ingestion_workflow.py all pass.
  • Windows 11, native: cargo test --locked --no-fail-fast -p convex-ext-redb -p convex-server -- --test-threads=1 with RUSTFLAGS=-Dwarnings, the "Server on Windows" CI job's command.
    • The first run did not compile application_path. The new test had landed between the demo test's #[cfg(target_os = "linux")] and its #[tokio::test]. Linux could not catch this, since both tests compile there.
    • Fixed in 6a07697. The second run passes everything with no warnings: application_path 5, books 8, startup_configuration_tests 7, api_integration_tests 165.
  • Test counts in the changed test files are unchanged apart from the deleted market_snapshots.rs (4 tests) and the new application_path test. websocket_integration_tests has 10, as on main; P3 removed the other 5.
  • tools/core_snapshot_io.py (not in CI) was not run.

Follow-ups

  • ServerConfig::env_var_names() omits CONVEX_CONFIGURATION_ID, although apply_overrides accepts it. This predates P5. It matters more now that production requires the setting.
  • Make the reference recorded_at monotonic so a WSL clock step cannot put it ahead of the lookup time (books.rs, startup_configuration_tests).

…ss and the TLS proxy

Delete the reactive second engine (scheduler, market data listener,
PricingEngine on_*/register_*), MarketDataProvider, ReferenceDataProvider,
the source traits nothing implements, every Empty*Source and the unused
file sources. The Live quote source now travels in RuntimeInput::Live, so
the builder cannot be given an empty provider.

The production profile runs the Live runtime of a stored activated
configuration and starts only with required access (policy and
introspection) behind the proxy TLS boundary. Each missing condition is
its own startup error before storage opens.

📝 Walkthrough

The engine removes provider-based market and reference data APIs, file-backed snapshot sources, the market-data listener, and scheduler modules. Live quote sources now enter through RuntimeInput::Live. Production startup now validates stored configuration and access requirements.

Changes: Engine and server runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove provider interfaces and adapters
crates/convex-ports/src/*, crates/convex-ext-file/*, crates/convex-engine/src/builder.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/lib.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/market_data_listener.rs, crates/convex-engine/src/scheduler.rs, engine and server tests, tools/library/library-inventory.json
The engine, ports, and file adapter remove provider-based market and auxiliary reference data APIs, along with the listener, scheduler, and snapshot sources. Engine construction now uses configuration and storage. Supporting tests and documentation no longer configure the removed providers.
Pass quote ingress through runtime input
crates/convex-engine/src/runtime/*, crates/convex-server/src/composition.rs, crates/convex-engine/tests/*, crates/convex-ext-file/README.md, crates/convex-engine/RUNTIME.md
RuntimeInput::Live carries a quote source. Server composition passes a scoped ingress to live runtime plans. Replay plans continue to use the canonical JSONL quotes file.
Validate production startup requirements
crates/convex-server/src/config.rs, crates/convex-server/tests/application_path.rs, crates/convex-server/tests/startup_configuration_tests.rs, crates/convex-server/ACCESS.md, crates/convex-server/README.md
Production startup now requires a stored configuration, required access mode, and proxy TLS boundary. Tests check startup validation and the failure path when the access probe is unavailable.

Production startup now requires a stored configuration ID, but it cannot be set through the CONVEX_CONFIGURATION_ID environment variable because the variable is rejected as unknown. Deployments that supply it in a TOML config file work. Add the variable to the allowlist and cover it with a test before merging, or document the config-file requirement.

Allow CONVEX_CONFIGURATION_ID in the environment setting list.

If an operator sets CONVEX_CONFIGURATION_ID, apply_overrides returns UNKNOWN_CONFIG_ENVIRONMENT before it reaches the handler at Line 308. An environment-only production deployment therefore cannot supply its required configuration_id. Add the name to env_var_names and test the environment override.
