The new move refactoring tool can write code that fails at runtime (missing imports for module constants, relocated nested definitions, mis-resolved relative imports), can generate Python syntax into files of other languages, and can revert the wrong change when its post-move check fails while still reporting that it rolled back. It can also refuse valid moves and, when multiple projects are indexed, edit the wrong repository. These issues should be addressed before merging.

Restore every inbound relationship site.

When an unchanged caller has multiple call or import sites for one endpoint pair, _StatefulIngestor stores all sites in edge_sites, but CYPHER_INBOUND_EDGES copies only the last site from edge_props. Incremental reingest then restores only that site and diverges from the persistent graph.

Emit one inbound row for each value from sites_of(edge).

Model only importer edges that the move rewrites.

This loop adds importer -> new_module for every module that imports anything from old_module. _retarget_importers rewrites only imports whose imported_name equals the moved symbol. The cycle check can therefore refuse a safe move because an unrelated import creates a simulated cycle. It also retains an old edge that the actual rewrite can remove.

Build the after-graph from the symbol-specific import sites that the plan will change.

Reject languages without a move implementation.

A loaded grammar does not mean that move generation supports the language. _add_import and _paste_text use JavaScript syntax only for _JS_LANGUAGES and Python syntax for every other language. This accepts Go, Rust, Java, and other files and can emit Python imports into them. TSX also takes the Python branch because _JS_LANGUAGES omits it.

Restrict move to the implemented languages, and classify TSX with JavaScript before accepting it.

Refuse nested definitions before cutting them.

The public contract allows module-level functions and classes, but this check accepts any non-method definition. A nested function or class keeps its indentation when _cut_span moves it to module scope. A new destination can then receive invalid code.

Verify that the selected definition is top-level, after accounting for decorator and export wrappers.

Preserve dependencies on ordinary module bindings.

_needed_from_old examines graph definitions only. A moved function that reads a module constant or assignment, such as DEFAULT_TIMEOUT, receives no import from the old module. The move parses and passes the current contract, but it fails with NameError at runtime.

Analyze free names against all top-level bindings. If a required binding cannot be moved or imported safely, refuse the move.

Parse new destination files before committing them.

patcher.stage_into validates patched existing files, but new_content is staged directly. Invalid generated code in a new destination is therefore committed without the parse gate. This occurs, for example, for a nested definition or an unsupported target language.

Parse new_content with the destination grammar and include failures in broken before the transaction commits.

Undo the move transaction by ID and verify the outcome.

undo_last reverses whichever transaction is newest when the contract check finishes. If another actor commits after this move, this call reverses that unrelated transaction. The code also ignores a failed undo and reports applied=False even when the move remains in the tree.

Undo report.transaction_id explicitly. Inspect the outcome before reporting rollback success or re-ingesting the restored files.

Rebase Python relative imports for the destination module.

This branch copies the original module specifier unchanged. If pkg/sub/util.py imports from .deps import X and the definition moves to pkg/core.py, the copied statement resolves as pkg.deps instead of pkg.sub.deps.

Resolve the original relative module from old_path, then render an equivalent import for new_path.

Use the selected project's indexed source root.

The project parameter selects the graph project, but _run_move always edits self.project_root. If another indexed project has the same relative path, move can modify the current repository using the other project's definition and import sites.

Resolve the root with graph_query.source_root_for, as _run_rename does. Refuse the operation when the selected project was not indexed from this root.

Read the complete multiline function header.

_is_variadic stops at the first line containing ), without tracking bracket depth. A ) inside a multiline default can therefore truncate the header before *rest. _header_is_variadic returns False for the resulting unparseable fragment, and _arity_verdict then returns DELTA_ARITY_TOO_MANY instead of suppressing the verdict. Continue collecting lines until the outer function header closes.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 3/5

Not safe to merge until the reproduced move-import and variadic-header failures are fixed, and the repository naming requirement is met.

Findings

  1. P1 Respect import scope ▶
  2. P2 Preserve future annotations ▶
  3. P2 Name the predicate clearly ▶

Summary

Merge safety

Do not merge yet. The move operation can produce rewritten Python modules that fail at runtime when an import exists only in a nested or conditional scope. It also changes postponed-annotation behavior when moving definitions from modules that use future annotations. Separately, multiline variadic signatures with parenthesized default values are misclassified, which can incorrectly reject an otherwise valid edit. The predicate naming requirement must also be satisfied before merging.

P1 Respect import scope

ast.walk(tree) treats imports inside functions and conditional blocks as though they bind the module namespace. After a move rewrites an outside call to pkg.new.helper(...), this can suppress the required top-level import pkg.new; the rewritten module then raises NameError when the call runs. Limit this check to imports that bind the rewritten call site's scope.

Artifacts

Nested import reproduction script

  • The authored script extracts and executes the checked-in predicate, creates a temporary fixture package, simulates the retarget import decision, and runs both affected modules; it demonstrates the scope distinction.

Nested and conditional import output

  • Captured run of the exact checked-in `_module_bound` shows `module_bound=True` for both cases and `NameError: name 'fixturepkg' is not defined`; the current implementation omits a required top-level binding.

Module-scope comparison output

  • Captured comparison run shows `module_bound=False` for both cases and `runtime=completed` after the retarget logic adds the top-level import; restricting the predicate to module scope prevents the failure.

P2 Preserve future annotations

This identifier-use filter omits from __future__ import annotations because annotations is not referenced by the moved definition. The destination therefore changes annotations from postponed strings to eager evaluation. If an annotation depends on deferred resolution, loading the destination module can fail; even when it loads, the moved API's annotation behavior changes. Preserve applicable future directives independently of symbol-use filtering.

Artifacts

Future annotation move harness

  • The complete executable harness creates the future-annotations fixture, invokes the real mover, and imports the resulting modules; it directly checks transferred source and annotation behavior.

Before-move annotation output

  • Executed before-move command and output show `pkg.util` loads with the future import present and both annotations stored as strings, establishing the baseline.

After-move annotation output

  • Executed actual-move command and output show the move applied, copied no future import, generated destination source without it, and eagerly evaluated annotations, confirming the semantic regression.

P2 Name the predicate clearly

_uses returns whether source text references a particular identifier, but its name does not state that purpose or result. This violates the repository directive requiring descriptive function names. Rename it to a clear predicate such as _references_identifier; this repository requirement must be satisfied before merging.

Rule Used: Use descriptive function names that clearly indicate what the function returns and its purpose. Prefer names like _get_grouping_key over _find_matching_pattern when the function's primary purpose is to return a value for a specific use case. (source)

Comments Outside Diff

These findings sit on lines the diff does not cover, so they could not be posted inline. Each one leaves this list once its file changes.

  • P1 Read complete headers codebase_rag/structural_delta.py:613 ▶

The scan stops at the first line containing ), including one that closes a default expression rather than the function parameter list. For def f(\n a=g(),\n *rest,\n):, the incomplete header is treated as non-variadic and a valid call is reported as having too many arguments. This can roll back a correct edit.

  • P1 Nested and conditional imports are mistaken for module-wide bindings during move retargeting ▶

    • Bug
      • _module_bound returns True for import fixturepkg.new beneath if False and inside configure(). _retarget_attribute_uses therefore does not insert import fixturepkg.new at module scope after rewriting an external fixturepkg.old.helper() call to fixturepkg.new.helper(). Runtime execution then raises NameError: name 'fixturepkg' is not defined.
    • Cause
      • codebase_rag/editing/move_scope.py:62 traverses every AST descendant with ast.walk(tree) and does not limit accepted ast.Import nodes to tree.body, where imports bind the module-global namespace.
    • Fix
      • Only recognize unaliased matching ast.Import statements at module scope (for example, iterate tree.body rather than ast.walk(tree)), and add regression coverage for conditional and function-local imports followed by an outside-scope retargeted call.
  • P1 Multiline default expression truncates variadic-header detection ▶

    • Bug
      • For a valid signature whose default expression closes before *rest, _is_variadic stops collecting the header at that default-expression ) and passes an incomplete header to _header_is_variadic. It returns false, which leads _arity_verdict to report a valid variadic call as too many arguments.
    • Cause
      • The loop at structural_delta.py lines 609–613 uses a raw ")" in line termination condition rather than detecting the closing parenthesis of the function parameter list.
    • Fix
      • Collect and parse the full definition header, or track parenthesis depth while scanning so only the parameter-list closing parenthesis terminates collection.
  • P2 Move drops postponed-annotation semantics ▶

    • Bug
      • A definition moved from a module using from __future__ import annotations does not retain that future import. In the executed move, the destination source was from pkg.util import DeferredType followed by the moved function, with no future import. The source module exposed string annotations, whereas the destination exposed evaluated class annotations.
    • Cause
      • Mover._needed_imports at move_operation.py:213-217 derives the import binding as annotations and skips the future import because _uses(moved_text, "annotations") is false. A future import is a module semantic directive rather than a symbol binding used by the moved text.
    • Fix
      • Preserve applicable Python from __future__ import ... directives when moving Python definitions into another module, independently of symbol-use filtering. Preserve only directives that remain valid at the target module header and avoid duplicate feature names.

Closing as superseded: this is part of the split of #1549, which was closed without merging, and it targets the stale feat/change-signature branch rather than main. The change_signature base was rebuilt on main as #1912 (now stacked as #2161–#2169). The branch is kept, so the move-op work can be rebased onto main if it's picked up again.
