RetriggerConfidence Score: 2/5

Not safe to merge until the reproduced move API, dependency-cycle, and variadic-header failures are fixed.

Findings

  1. P1 Move API cannot run ▶
  2. P1 Unrelated imports block moves ▶
  3. P1 Variadic headers are truncated ▶

Summary

This change adds move-refactoring support and related dependency analysis, but three reproduced correctness failures prevent the feature from working reliably: the public move entry point imports a missing module, cycle detection can reject safe moves, and multiline variadic signatures can be misclassified.

P1 Move API cannot run

The new public codebase_rag.editing.move() entry point imports .move_operation, but that module is not present. Every call therefore raises ModuleNotFoundError before a move can be planned or applied.

Artifacts

Evidence from the check

  • Authored and executed source that loads the changed move module, models its package re-export, calls the public API path, and checks for the specific missing-module failure; it enables a focused check despite the host Python-version mismatch.

Command output from the check

  • Captured execution output of the focused API-path script, showing the call reaches move.py line 50 and raises ModuleNotFoundError for codebase_rag.editing.move_operation; the claim is confirmed.

Command output from the check

  • Captured direct public-package import attempt showing the host's Python 3.11 cannot parse the project's Python 3.12 type-statement syntax before the changed API can load; this explains why the focused compatibility harness was used.

P1 Unrelated imports block moves

The cycle projection adds new_module for every module importing old_module, without checking whether that module imports the symbol being moved. An importer of an unrelated symbol can therefore gain a synthetic dependency, create a cycle, and cause a safe move to be refused.

Artifacts

Evidence from the check

  • Authored script executes the checked-out cycle method with an unrelated-symbol importer fixture and a same-source baseline with only the disputed block removed, providing the focused reproduction.

Command output from the check

  • Executed baseline command from `/home/user/repo`; with only lines 37-39 removed, the identical graph reports `ALLOWED`, showing the safe-move outcome.

Command output from the check

  • Executed current checked-out source from `/home/user/repo`; it reports `REFUSED` for the new `project.importer -> project.new_module` cycle, confirming the claim.

Command output from the check

  • Executed Python bytecode compilation of the uploaded validation script successfully, confirming the test harness is syntactically valid.

P1 Variadic headers are truncated

The header reader stops at any line containing ), including a nested call in a default value. For def f(\n a=g(),\n *rest,\n):, it stops after a=g(), and reports the function as non-variadic. Valid signature edits can then fail their arity check and be rolled back.

Artifacts

Evidence from the check

  • The script extracts and executes the exact relevant helper nodes from the changed source against a temporary Python file, proving the observed behavior.

Command output from the check

  • The executed baseline command parses the complete valid header and returns True, establishing that the header declares a variadic parameter.

Command output from the check

  • The executed current-helper command reads the same header from a real temporary file and returns False, proving the truncation defect.

Comments Outside Diff

These findings sit on lines the diff does not cover, so they could not be posted inline. Each one leaves this list once its file changes.

  • P1 Exported move API imports a module absent from the PR tree ▶

    • Bug
      • codebase_rag.editing.__init__ newly re-exports move, but calling that public function reaches codebase_rag/editing/move.py:50, which imports .move_operation. No move_operation file is present in the current tree, so the operation always raises ModuleNotFoundError before it can plan or apply a move.
    • Cause
      • The new wrapper references an implementation module that was not added to the PR/current tree.
    • Fix
      • Add and package codebase_rag/editing/move_operation.py with the expected move (and Mover) implementation, or change the wrapper to import the implementation module that actually exists; add a public API invocation test.
  • P1 Cycle simulation retargets unrelated importers ▶

    • Bug
      • _refuse_cycles treats every module-level import edge to old_module as if it must also import new_module. An importer that imports only an unrelated symbol from the old module receives a synthetic edge to the new module. The focused executed graph then creates a fresh project.importer <-> project.new_module cycle and rejects the move, although moving moved does not change that importer.
    • Cause
      • codebase_rag/editing/move_cycles.py:37-39 has only module-edge data and unconditionally adds new_module; it neither receives nor consults the symbol-specific importer set produced by _retarget_importers.
    • Fix
      • Build the proposed graph from the symbol-specific importer paths/qualified modules actually retargeted for the moved name, replacing their old edge only when no unchanged imports from old_module remain. Do not add new_module for unrelated importers.
  • P1 Multiline variadic function headers are truncated at parentheses in default expressions ▶

    • Bug
      • For def f( a=g(), *rest, ):, _is_variadic stops after the a=g(), line because it contains ). It never reads *rest, and returns False even though the definition is variadic.
    • Cause
      • The header collection loop treats any ) character as the end of the parameter list instead of locating the syntactic closing parenthesis for the function header.
    • Fix
      • Collect and parse the full definition/header span, or use token/AST-aware parenthesis tracking that ignores nested parentheses in defaults, strings, and comments before calling _header_is_variadic.

Include TSX in JavaScript import handling.

SupportedLanguage.TSX is absent from _JS_LANGUAGES. A move from a .tsx module therefore skips specifier extraction and import narrowing. Relative imports can remain unchanged or use the wrong source-module spelling, so importer rewrites can be omitted.

Use the existing shared language set.

Check only module-level imports.

ast.walk(tree) also finds imports inside functions and classes. Such an import does not bind the module name in other scopes. _retarget_attribute_uses can then skip the required top-level import and produce a NameError.

Inspect direct module statements only.

Read the complete multiline header before parsing it.

_is_variadic still stops at the first line that contains ). For a valid definition with a multiline default before *rest, it passes an incomplete header to _header_is_variadic, which returns False. _arity_verdict then reports DELTA_ARITY_TOO_MANY for calls that *rest accepts and rejects the edit. Parse or tokenize through the actual function-header terminator, and add this multiline case.

What changed in this PR

This PR extends the refactoring/editing layer to support a forthcoming move(qn, target_module) operation by (a) exposing move types/API, (b) adding graph queries/constants needed to retarget import statements safely, and (c) improving test/eval infrastructure to handle multiple edge “sites” and more accurate Python variadic-header detection.

Changes:

  • Add move-support helpers: importer retargeting (move_retarget.py) and import-cycle refusal (move_cycles.py).
  • Extend graph query surface area (new CYPHER_GRAPH_IMPORTS_OF, CLI/MCP constants) and update the eval graph store to preserve multiple sites per edge.
  • Fix Python variadic header detection by parsing headers with ast and add regression tests.
File Description
evals/cgr_graph.py Tracks multiple edge “sites” per endpoint pair and emits per-site rows for graph queries.
codebase_rag/tests/test_variadic_header_detection.py Adds regression tests for _header_is_variadic using ast as ground truth.

Closing as superseded: this is part of the split of #1549, which was closed without merging, and it targets the stale feat/change-signature branch rather than main. The change_signature base was rebuilt on main as #1912 (now stacked as #2161–#2169). The branch is kept, so the move-op work can be rebased onto main if it's picked up again.
