Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a change-signature command and MCP tool to update a function or method’s parameters and known call sites using explicit mappings.
    • Both interfaces support dry runs and identify call sites that cannot be mapped. Changes may be refused or rolled back when validation fails.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Rename results now omit the verdict field when no verdict is available instead of returning it as null.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds signature rewriting for definitions and known call sites. It validates edits through transactions and optional reingestion. It exposes the operation through CLI and MCP interfaces and conditionally includes verdict data in output.

Changes

Signature Editing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signature rewrite and transaction enforcement
codebase_rag/editing/signature.py, codebase_rag/editing/__init__.py
Adds parameter specification parsing, transactional signature edits, parse-failure rollback, contract enforcement, optional reingestion, and public exports.
CLI command and output wiring
codebase_rag/cli.py, codebase_rag/cli_help.py
Adds the change-signature command and parameter mapping help. The command reports mapped and unmapped sites and conditionally emits verdict data. The rename output uses the same conditional verdict behavior.
MCP tool and schema integration
codebase_rag/mcp/tools.py, codebase_rag/tools/tool_descriptions.py
Adds the MCP schema, handler, project validation, graph locking, refusal handling, optional reingestion, and result serialization for signature changes.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Omit verdict from the initial _asdict() payload.

report._asdict() already inserts verdict, so each conditional assignment still leaves "verdict": null when no verdict exists.

Roll back the signature transaction by ID.

undo_last() always targets the newest transaction. Use undo_transaction(self.repo_root, report.transaction_id) instead. Handle TransactionConflict and a false TransactionOutcome.applied before setting applied=False. If rollback is refused, the signature edit remains applied and the report must not claim that it was reverted.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 2/5

Not safe to merge: indexed MCP signature changes fail, and unsuccessful synchronization can leave edits or unrelated transaction state in an incorrect state.

Findings

  1. P1 Removed Helper Breaks MCP ▶
  2. P1 Report Post-Commit Failures ▶
  3. P1 Rollback Correct Transaction ▶

Summary

  • The new MCP signature-change flow calls a registry helper that no longer exists, so indexed-project requests fail before the requested operation can run.
  • A graph re-ingestion failure can occur after the source edit has been committed, leaving callers without a structured result that explains the partially completed operation.
  • Contract-failure rollback can undo a newer unrelated repository transaction rather than the signature change.

T-Rex validation blocked

The focused interleaving harness could not run under the available environment because the repository requires Python 3.12 while the available interpreter was Python 3.11; the alternative dependency setup was blocked by unavailable build dependencies. The affected rollback path remains supported by the changed control flow and transaction implementation.

P1 Removed Helper Breaks MCP

_reingest_for_contract() calls _updater_for_reingest(), but MCPToolsRegistry no longer defines that method. The new change-signature path supplies this callback for indexed projects, including dry runs, so those requests fail with AttributeError before the requested signature operation runs.

P1 Report Post-Commit Failures

The edit is committed before measure() invokes graph re-ingestion, but exceptions from that callback are not handled. If re-ingestion fails, the signature change remains on disk while API, CLI, and MCP callers receive an exception or generic failure instead of a SignatureReport explaining that the edit landed and graph synchronization may be incomplete.

P1 Rollback Correct Transaction

On a failed contract check, undo_last() reverses the newest repository transaction instead of the signature transaction identified by report.transaction_id. Another edit can commit after the signature transaction and before this rollback, causing this code to undo that unrelated edit, leave the signature change applied, and report that it was not applied.

return {
cs.DICT_KEY_ERROR: cs.RENAME_WRONG_ROOT.format(project=project_name)

Two defects the rebase surfaced, both from the branch being written against
a much older `mcp/tools.py`.

`_reingest_for_contract` called `_updater_for_reingest`, which no longer
exists, and passed the re-ingest callback RAW. Main replaced that with
`_guarded_rename_reingest`, which wraps the callback in the incomplete-run
marker: mark before the first write, clear after, refuse rather than start
if the marker cannot be written. Passing it raw is the failure Greptile
caught on PR #1547 -- a process death part way through leaves a partial
graph a restarted server reads as complete. Now delegates to it.

`change_signature` was a graph reader that never refused on a partial graph.
`_NOT_GRAPH_READERS` is deliberately fail-closed (PR #1547): a new tool
counts as a reader until classified, and `test_every_graph_reader_is_guarded`
fails until it is guarded or listed. It is an EDIT, like RENAME which sits
in that set already -- it runs its own re-ingest behind the marker and holds
the result to the postcondition contract, so refusing up front on a partial
graph would block the operation that repairs it.

Verified: 343 passed across test_mcp_project_scoping, test_rename_op,
test_edit_contract and test_change_signature. Deleting the classification
line reddens test_every_graph_reader_is_guarded naming change_signature.
…type fetch_all as QueryFn

`_reingest_for_contract` still called `_updater_for_reingest`, which the
base deleted under #1783, so every call raised AttributeError and ty
reported it unresolved. It now delegates to `_guarded_rename_reingest`, as
the owner's e5e9f1c does on the source branch: that helper returns None
for an unindexed project and wraps the callback in the incomplete-run
marker.

`change_signature` annotated `fetch_all` with a hand-written Callable that
matched neither `MemgraphIngestor.fetch_all` nor `SignaturePlanner`, which
takes `QueryFn`. That gave three invalid-argument-type errors, and `QueryFn`
clears all three.

The red here is fixed at 04d6eee:

Locally 461 tests pass across the MCP, contract, rename and CLI suites. pr-7 to pr-10 are rebased onto it with --force-with-lease and pass their change-signature tests (19 and 6). #2108 is closed as superseded.

Propagate an incomplete-marker clear failure.

The callback's success path at line 2739 calls self._require_marker_cleared(project_name) and discards its return value. The method returns None on success or an error message string on failure. When clearing fails, the error is silently discarded and the callback returns a normal ReingestReport, allowing the signature operation to report success while the project remains marked incomplete. Later graph reads and edits then refuse with an incomplete-marker error.

Check the return value and raise before returning the report.

+ raise RuntimeError(clearing_error)
             return report

Superseded: change_signature lands through the split of #1912, which replaces #1548, as the stack #2163 → #2161 → #2162 → #2166 → #2164 → #2169 → #2168 → #2165 → #2167 on main. Closing this split-pr1548 stack at the owner's direction.
