Convert the missing definition-file PatcherError into SignatureRefused.
When patcher.source(path) finds a missing definition file, _definition propagates PatcherError. The CLI and MCP handlers catch only SignatureRefused, so a stale graph can produce an unhandled exception instead of a refusal response. Catch PatcherError and reuse cs.SIGNATURE_MISSING_FILE.

Greptile SummaryThis change adds graph-driven function signature editing through the CLI and MCP interfaces, including caller updates, override-hierarchy updates, transactional source changes, and postcondition checks. Three reproducible runtime-correctness failures remain in Confidence Score: 2/5Not safe to merge until the signature editor preserves caller compatibility and Python parameter-binding semantics. Duplicate mappings consume the source value
A valid change_signature(..., ['left@0', 'right@0']) request rewrites def helper(value) into def helper(left, right), but the caller helper(7) remains a one-argument call. _map_arguments removes the old value with values.pop() for the first mapping, so the second mapping is treated as omitted even though it references the same source. The edit reports success but leaves callers that raise TypeError at runtime. Reject duplicate sources during spec resolution, or preserve the mapped value so every duplicate mapping emits the caller expression.
Artifacts
Duplicate-source reproduction script
- Review-authored script creates and indexes a temporary Python project, applies the duplicate source mapping, and executes the rewritten caller; takeaway: it directly covers the affected API and runtime path.
Duplicate-source output before edit
- Executed before-mode command and captured `helper(7)` returning `(7, 7)` with exit code 0; takeaway: the original caller is valid before the change.
Duplicate-source output after edit
- Executed the real graph-indexed change-signature flow and then the rewritten application, capturing an unchanged `helper(7)` caller and missing-`right` TypeError; takeaway: the duplicate mapping produces a runtime-breaking rewrite.

Hierarchy callers use the wrong parameter names
plan() derives old_names only from the selected method and reuses them for call sites of every override. If an override has a locally different parameter name, such as Square.area(self, factor) overriding Base.area(self, scale), a resolved caller Square().area(factor=2) is left unchanged after the override is rewritten to use scale. The operation commits successfully, but the rewritten program raises TypeError for the unexpected factor keyword. Derive each hierarchy member's pre-edit positional and keyword-only parameter names before rewriting that member's callers.
Artifacts
Hierarchy override keyword reproduction script
- Review-authored executable source creates, indexes, rewrites, inspects, and runs the base/override fixture, proving the failure path.
Override keyword output before edit
- The executed fixture source and result show `Square().area(factor=2)` returns `8` before the signature change, establishing the valid baseline.
Override keyword output after edit
- The executed signature-change flow reports `applied=True`, shows the keyword call remained `factor=2`, and captures the resulting TypeError, confirming the bug.
- Captured numbered source lines show selected-method `old_names` being passed to all hierarchy member sites and unknown keywords being rejected, identifying the root cause.
Focused signature-change test output
- The executed project suite reports 18 passing signature-change tests, showing the focused regression is not covered by existing tests.

…ares `_map_arguments` consumed one value per spec and returned without checking what was left. A stale caller passing surplus positional arguments had them dropped from its own source, the site was recorded as successfully rewritten, and `unmapped` was empty. The postcondition contract cannot catch this: the argument is gone from the file before the delta is measured, so the `too_many` arity check sees nothing. It is data loss on the caller's source rather than a wrong edit. Refuse instead, listing the site as unmapped and leaving the file untouched. The test drives a three-argument call to a two-parameter definition; the existing variadic test refuses at the DEFINITION and never reaches the mapping, which is why nothing covered this. Also formats the `_reingest_for_contract` signature introduced by the rebase conflict resolution: at 104 characters it failed `ruff format`, which is a pre-commit hook.

Duplicate source mappings consume the source value
_resolve_specs() accepts repeated resolved source indexes, but _map_arguments() removes each source with values.pop(). A request such as ['left@0', 'right@0'] for def helper(value) therefore rewrites the definition to def helper(left, right) while leaving helper(3) as a one-argument call. The optional reingestion hook can roll this back, but callers of the public API are allowed to omit it, in which case the edit is applied and the rewritten program raises TypeError because right is missing. Reject duplicate resolved source indexes, including aliases supplied through @name, before staging the edit.
Artifacts
Focused duplicate source mapping reproduction script
- This full executable script creates and indexes an isolated Python fixture, runs baseline and rewritten tests, and exercises both guarded and unguarded change-signature application; it demonstrates the duplicate-source request is accepted and can generate a broken caller.
Indexed duplicate source mapping execution output
- This captured command output shows fixture indexing, dry-run acceptance, guarded rollback, unguarded application, and the generated `helper(left, right)` definition with unchanged `helper(3)` caller; the unsafe public-API path produces the broken program.
Rewritten fixture test failure output
- This captured pytest run after the accepted rewrite fails at `helper(3)` with a missing required `right` argument; the rewritten program is invalid.

Hierarchy callers use the wrong parameter names
plan() derives old_names and keyword-only names only from the selected definition, then uses them for callers of every override. When Base.area(self, scale) has an override Square.area(self, factor), changing the hierarchy rewrites Square.area to use scale but leaves a graph-resolved Square().area(factor=2) call untouched because factor is unknown to the base signature. The operation still commits with a successful contract verdict, and the rewritten program raises TypeError: Square.area() got an unexpected keyword argument 'factor'. Derive each hierarchy member's pre-edit parameter names before rewriting that member's callers, or refuse the edit when a resolved caller cannot remain compatible.
Artifacts
Hierarchy signature reproduction source
- The executable fixture indexes Base and Square through the project's parser, GraphUpdater, and stateful ingestor, performs the Base request, and runs the fixture before and after; it reproduces the failure.
Hierarchy signature reproduction output after the Base signature change
- The captured command output shows the resolved Square call, successful edit transaction, unchanged factor keyword call, and resulting Python TypeError; it confirms the runtime breakage.

Positional-only separator is lost
_parameters() discards Python's / separator and _rewrite_definition() reconstructs only normal parameters plus an optional *. Rewriting def target(a, b, /, c) with an identity mapping emits def target(a, b, c), weakening the callable contract: target(a=1, b=2, c=3), which originally raises TypeError, is accepted after the edit. Preserve the positional-only boundary and re-emit / after the corresponding rewritten parameters.
Artifacts
Focused positional-only signature reproduction script

Positional-only signature reproduction output after operation
- Captured command output shows the indexed fixture before and after the operation, including `/` removal and acceptance of the formerly invalid keyword call; it confirms the defect.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Reuse values for duplicate source mappings.
The public new_params contract does not require one-to-one source use, so specs such as ["a@0", "b@0"] can be intentional. _map_arguments removes the value with values.pop(...) on the first spec; the second spec then emits no argument and can leave a required parameter missing. Keep the bound value available for repeated specs, while tracking consumed indices separately for SIGNATURE_SURPLUS_ARGS. Do not reject duplicate sources.

Validate defaults on mapped parameters. n=1 stores literal="1" with no source, but n=1@0 and b:str='x'@1`` store the value in default with `literal=None`. `_check_literals` skips these parser-generated mapped defaults. Therefore, `n=1@0` can render `n: str = 1` without refusal. Check `spec.default` for mapped specs against `spec.annotation` or `declared[spec.from_index]`.

Check for variadic parameters in every hierarchy member, not only the primary definition.
Line 417 tests _VARIADIC_PARAM_TYPES against the parameters of qn only. plan then calls _rewrite_definition for each hierarchy member. An override such as def helper(self, a, *rest) passes the check, and _parameters returns *rest as a positional parameter. _rewrite_definition renders only the parameters the specs name, so *rest is dropped from the override and its callers lose their extra arguments silently.
Move the variadic check into _rewrite_definition, so each member is refused.

Handle rollback failures from undo_last. If a committed file changes before contract rollback, EditTransaction._check_unchanged raises TransactionConflict. The module-level undo_last does not return an outcome, so _enforce_contract never returns SIGNATURE_CONTRACT_FAILED. Handle both failed outcomes and rollback exceptions, then surface rollback failure explicitly.

🌐 Web query:
Which exceptions can ast.literal_eval raise in Python 3.12 documentation
💡 Result:
The official Python 3.12 documentation for ast.literal_eval does not explicitly list the specific exceptions the function may raise [1]. However, based on the implementation in the ast module, the function is designed to raise a ValueError when it encounters a node or string that is not a supported literal structure [2][3]. In practice, because ast.literal_eval performs parsing and evaluation of literal expressions, it can raise the following exceptions depending on the input: 1. ValueError: This is explicitly raised by the internal _raise_malformed_node helper function when the input contains unsupported nodes or malformed structures (e.g., expressions that are not simple literals) [2]. 2. SyntaxError: Since the function internally uses ast.parse to process input strings, it will raise a SyntaxError if the provided string is not valid Python syntax [2]. 3. TypeError: This may be raised if the input node or string contains types or structures that the conversion logic does not support or cannot process correctly [4]. 4. MemoryError: Extremely large or deeply nested inputs may exceed memory limits during processing [4]. Additionally, the documentation warns that while ast.literal_eval is designed to avoid executing arbitrary code, it is not entirely free from attack [5][1]. Specifically, complex or malicious expressions can lead to excessive CPU consumption, high memory usage, or exhaustion of the C stack, which may crash the Python interpreter [5][1][4]. Users are cautioned against using it on untrusted data [5].

Invalidate the cached updater after a partial signature rollback re-ingest. SignatureReport has no graph_incomplete field, so _run_change_signature cannot detect this case. After undo_last, GraphUpdater.reingest() can fail after graph deletion and propagate the exception. The cached updater then describes a partial graph. Record this rollback failure and clear _live_updater while preserving the pre-mutation ReingestAborted behavior.

Each of these reported success and left the edited project raising TypeError at runtime, which is the worst shape for an operation whose job is rewriting someone's source. Two new parameters could name one old source. `_map_arguments` consumes the site's value, so the first mapping took it and every later one read as omitted: `['left@0','right@0']` on `def helper(value)` rewrote the definition to two parameters and left `helper(7)` a one-argument call. The request is refused now, the way the duplicate-NAME guard beside it already refuses, rather than emitting one value into two parameters and leaving the caller to find out at runtime. Callers of an override were matched against the selected method's parameter names. `old_names` was derived once and reused for every hierarchy member, so `Square.area(self, factor)` overriding `Base.area(self, scale)` had `Square().area(factor=2)` read as an unknown keyword and left alone, against a definition that had just been rewritten. Each member now carries its own pre-edit names and keyword-only set. The existing hierarchy test spells the parameter the same way in both classes, which is why this went unseen. Python's `/` was dropped on rebuild. It is not a parameter and rightly sits outside the mapping model, but it is load-bearing in the emitted signature: `def target(a, b, /, c)` came back as `def target(a, b, c)` and began accepting `target(a=1, b=2, c=3)`, a call the original rejects. It is put back from the boundary the parse records, and a rewrite that would move a parameter across it is refused rather than answering a question about argument binding that nobody asked.

Brings the cascade-rebased result (feat/1536-context-slice-rebased, e4adb72) onto this branch as a fast-forwardable merge, so the PR's head advances without rewriting published history. The tree of this commit is IDENTICAL to e4adb72 -- verified with `git diff --stat e4adb72`, which is empty. The 51 merge conflicts were not hand-resolved: the whole tree was taken from the rebased branch, which is the version that was built layer by layer on the rebased stack and tested. Why this shape. #1551 is the top of a five-layer stack that was never a registered gh stack: hand-based branches with the base set in the PR form, so every layer's diff carried its ancestors' commits. Rebasing the bottom (#1548) cascaded through move-op (#1549) and extract-inline (#1550) to here. The layers below were force-pushed; this one takes the merge route instead. Contents, as committed on the rebased branch: - `context`, a graph-ranked token-budgeted slice (issue #1536). - Classified in `_READS_THE_GRAPH`, NOT exempted into `_NOT_GRAPH_READERS` like move/extract/inline: it is a pure reader routed through `_graph_query`, and on a partial graph it would silently drop callers, callees and reaching tests from the slice and spend the budget on a quietly incomplete context. - Four `_reingest_for_contract` call sites pass `project_name`, as main's guarded helper requires (PR #1547). Verified on the identical tree: 242 passed across test_context_slice and test_mcp_project_scoping; ruff check and format clean.
