Summary

  • rename no longer guesses when a graph-recorded call site is stale. If the call at the recorded start no longer ends where the graph says, the site is reported as unlocatable and the rename is refused. Before, the outermost call at that start was rewritten, which can be a different method's call.
  • Moves the call-site helpers rename already had into editing/sites.py so change_signature can share them, and adds change_signature_expectation to the postcondition contract.
  • Adds the change_signature message and key constants. Nothing calls change_signature yet.

Demo

cgr rename on a stale index: main rewrites q.helper(10).helper(2) to q.fetch(10).fetch(2), renaming Row.helper's call too; this branch refuses the stale site

Animated run

The same before and after run, animated

store was indexed into Memgraph, then app.py was edited from q.helper(1).helper(2) to q.helper(10).helper(2) without re-indexing. The graph's Query.helper site in store.app.run (line 6, columns 11-22) is now stale. The second .helper(2) is Row.helper, which has no fetch.

cgr rename store.models.Query.helper fetch --project store --allow-heuristic --dry-run:

  • Before (5a6a931c8, main): the stale site falls back to the outermost call at its start, and the diff renames both calls to q.fetch(10).fetch(2).
  • After (e43a3e5c7, this branch): Cannot rename store.models.Query.helper: 1 graph-known site(s) carry no rewrite location, with store.app.run: site cannot be located (stale site). Nothing is written.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Signature-change checks distinguish multiple calls on the same line, so each call site is validated independently.
    • Heuristic-based rewrites can be identified and restricted unless explicitly allowed.
    • Validation catches unmapped call sites and prevents one rewritten call from covering another on the same line.
    • Signature-change reports provide clearer feedback about validation issues and rewrite outcomes.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Rename operations no longer guess which call to change when a recorded location is stale, reducing the risk of modifying the wrong code.

The changes add constants and contract checks for signature changes. Contract checks distinguish call sites by column and support an explicit heuristic policy. Shared graph-site helpers provide hierarchy and call-node resolution used by rename.

Shared graph-site helpers and rename
codebase_rag/editing/sites.py, codebase_rag/editing/rename.py, codebase_rag/tests/test_rename_stale_call_site.py
Adds shared helpers for ambiguity classification, method hierarchy lookup, and call-node resolution. Rename uses these helpers and marks a call site as stale when a parsed call starts at its recorded position but cannot be resolved.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: claude

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9de6f

Rename can refuse a valid graph-known call site when its recorded end is absent. Preserve missing ends during call resolution before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9de6f

The change rejects stale call locations rather than guessing and does not appear to grant broader editing authority. Remaining uncertainty concerns compatibility with incomplete call-location data and recovery after abrupt interruption.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Rename can affect multiple files and transitive override members, rather than only the selected definition. The PR preserves that traversal and the existing preview/apply entrypoint instead of introducing a new execution or write-authority path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected stale-index wrong-target path is blocked when calls start at the recorded location but none matches the recorded end. Existing no-call or unsupported-parser fallback behavior remains, so this is not a guarantee that every stale-index case is rejected.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Heuristic opt-in does not bypass stale-site refusal: stale sites receive the unlocatable classification, and plan rejects those sites before evaluating the heuristic policy.

Comment thread codebase_rag/editing/sites.py Resolved
With a grammar available, call_node_at returning nothing means the index
no longer matches the file. _last_identifier read that as 'no grammar'
and cut at the last '(', picking the inner callee of helper(helper(1)).
A call site in that state is now recorded unlocatable ('stale site'),
which blocks the rename like any other unlocatable site (bot review).
The first cut flagged any call site with a grammar and no located call
as stale, which caught every Java call: method_invocation has no
'function' field, so call_node_at never finds one and test_java_rename
failed. Staleness is now calls starting at the recorded position with
none ending where the site recorded its end, exactly the bot's case; a
position no call starts at keeps the fallback.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve missing call ends as unrecorded.

When a CALLS row has valid start coordinates but no end coordinates, _add_site supplies a synthetic end. call_node_at then requires an exact end match and can return no node for the valid call. The new branch marks that site as stale and refuses the rename.

Pass None to call resolution when the graph has no recorded end. Use the synthetic bounds only for fallback text scanning.

A CALLS row with a start but no end was given a synthetic end before the
call lookup, which then found no call ending there and refused the rename
as stale. The lookup now gets no end, so it picks the outermost call; the
synthetic span is kept for the text fallback only.

@coderabbitai The outside-diff finding on rename.py:317-324 (missing call ends treated as recorded) is fixed in 2561d50. _last_identifier now passes no end to the call lookup when the graph recorded none, and keeps the synthetic span only for the text fallback. test_a_call_site_with_no_recorded_end_names_the_outer_callee fails on the previous commit and passes now.

@vitali87 Thanks for the fix. I checked 2561d50. _last_identifier now preserves missing end coordinates as None for call lookup and uses the synthetic span only for text fallback.

The regression test checks that the outer callee is selected when no end was recorded. This addresses the finding. I did not run the tests.

@vitali87 Thanks for the fix. I checked 2561d50. _last_identifier now passes missing end coordinates as None to the call lookup. It uses the synthetic span only for text fallback.

The regression test asserts that a call site with no recorded end selects the outer callee. This addresses the finding. I did not run the tests.
