Summary

  • Adds codebase_rag/editing/signature.py. SignatureChanger plans a parameter-list change over the override hierarchy and every graph-known call site, stages it in an edit transaction and applies it. With a re-ingest available, it enforces the postcondition contract and rolls back on failure.
  • change_signature() is the entry point. A call site the mapping cannot complete is listed as unmapped and left untouched.
  • Not reachable from the CLI or MCP yet; feat(signature): expose change_signature through the CLI and MCP, with docs (#1533, 5/9) #2164 wires it up.

Demo

No user-visible change: adds the change_signature operation as an internal API, which #2164 exposes through the CLI and MCP.

Related Issues

Part of #1533 (split from #1912; stack: #2163 → #2161 → #2162 → #2166 → #2164 → #2169 → #2168 → #2165 → #2167).

Test Plan

  • Unit tests pass (make test-parallel or uv run pytest -n auto -m "not integration")

  • New tests added

  • Integration tests pass (make test-integration, requires Docker)

  • Manual testing (describe below)

  • uv run python -m pytest codebase_rag/tests/test_signature_changer.py -p no:randomly -q at 025a7976b: 39 passed.

  • The full suite was not run locally. The CI Unit Tests run at 025a7976b was cancelled before it finished.

  • Manual, at 025a7976b against Memgraph 3.3.0: a script called change_signature(..., ["price", "pct", "currency: str"], mapping={"currency": '="EUR"'}, dry_run=True) on a small shop repo whose discount(price, pct) has three callers. It reported 2 sites to rewrite (discount(p, 10, "EUR") and discount(price=p, pct=25, currency="EUR")) and listed the discount(*args) caller as unmapped.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Change Python function signatures and update recognized call sites.
    • Preview proposed edits with a diff, and map new parameters to existing parameters or literal values.
    • Review call sites that could not be updated; heuristic mapping is available for ambiguous bindings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevent removal of parameters still used in a function body and avoid editing files changed after planning.
    • Roll back changes when edits fail, rewritten code cannot be parsed, or post-change validation does not pass.

Walkthrough

Adds a Python signature editing operation. It plans changes to definitions and graph-known call sites, reports unmappable sites, and supports preview or apply behavior with rollback and optional re-ingest postcondition checks.

Changes: Signature editing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan signatures and map call sites
codebase_rag/editing/signature.py, codebase_rag/constants/ast_python.py, codebase_rag/constants/cli.py, codebase_rag/tests/test_signature_changer.py
SignatureChanger checks definitions and hierarchy members, resolves parameter mappings, and plans call-site rewrites. It reports sites it cannot map, including explicit receiver calls. Tests cover parameter validation, receiver handling, and unmapped-site cases.
Stage, preview, and apply edits
codebase_rag/editing/signature.py, codebase_rag/constants/cli.py, codebase_rag/tests/test_signature_changer.py
Staging refuses edits when source files changed after planning. Preview returns a diff and rolls back. Apply rolls back on staging or parse failure; otherwise it commits and can enforce a postcondition after re-ingestion. Tests cover preview, apply, rollback, and changed source files.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d30b7

The new signature-change operation reports calls it cannot rewrite and refuses to apply edits when files change after planning. No merge-blocking issue remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4418f

The operation adds coordinated source-editing authority, but this PR does not expose it through commands or remote tools. Workspace containment and stale-write checks limit the demonstrated exposure. Remaining uncertainty concerns matching the index to the selected workspace and recovering consistent file and index state after interrupted or failed verification.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated write scope is the selected workspace's planned definitions and graph-known callers. A caller supplies the graph query capability, project identity and re-ingestion callback; this PR does not demonstrate newly granted credentials, tenant authority or remote editing access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The patcher resolves supplied paths beneath the selected root, and the transaction layer repeats containment checks. These controls reject ordinary traversal and paths currently resolving through symlinks outside the workspace; they do not establish that the graph was indexed from that workspace.
  • observed — The new direct API does not validate the graph project's stored root before interpreting relative locations. Project ownership filtering is present, but root provenance remains a caller assumption. Base direct rename has the same assumption, whereas its MCP adapter explicitly checks the stored root; no bypass of that adapter is added here.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — File commit and graph verification are separate transitions. Omitting re-ingestion skips verification; measurement failure leaves the committed edit applied, and some failures mark graph_incomplete. Consumers therefore need to distinguish applied file state from verified graph consistency before repeating graph-driven edits.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before adding a less-trusted adapter, enforce graph-to-workspace root provenance and bind re-ingestion to the same project. Make these caller obligations explicit for the direct Python API.
  • proposed — Define recovery requirements for repeated edits after unmeasured or incomplete graph states. If crash-atomic multi-file editing is required, strengthen the shared transaction mechanism rather than assuming ordinary exception restoration provides interruption recovery.

Unit Tests (windows-latest, py3.12, shard 2/2) failed on c90c6b3d in test_embedded_graph_native.py::TestGraphVersion::test_seconds_left_follows_the_running_deadline: assert 60.00000000000006 <= 60.

Fixed in ff89d3d. Deadline.after(60) stores monotonic() + 60, and seconds_left() returns at - monotonic(). On Windows the monotonic clock advances in coarse steps, so both reads can return the same t. Then (t + 60) - t rounds slightly above 60. With the clock frozen at 100.014, the old assertion fails on any platform (60.000000000000014). The test now allows that rounding (<= 60 + 1e-6).

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge, with no outstanding high-severity findings.

Summary

Adds change_signature to plan and apply Python parameter changes across related methods and graph-known callers.

  • Python signature changes can update graph-known definitions and call sites.
  • The embedded-graph test allows a wider timing variation.

… the planned bytes

A call that reaches an instance method through its class, `Base.f(obj, a)`
(or `cls.f`, `type(obj).f`, `obj.__class__.f`), passes the receiver as its
first argument; binding it to the first declared parameter shifted every
value one slot. Such a site is now listed as unmapped.

`_stage` re-read every file from disk, so a file changed after planning
had the edits spliced at offsets measured in other bytes. The edits are
now applied to the planning patcher's own sources, and a file whose disk
content no longer matches them is refused.

Adds tests for the operation: apply under the contract, preview, plan,
parse-failure rollback, the refusals, the sites it cannot read, and a
regression test for each fix.
#2162 now spells reordered values by keyword in their written order, so
the dry run renders `helper(a=3, b='z')` rather than `helper('z', 3)`.
…ents

#2162 reorders a site positionally again when its values are only names
and plain literals, so the dry run renders `helper('z', 3)` once more.
Windows' monotonic clock advances in coarse steps, so Deadline.after(60)
and seconds_left() can read the same value t, and (t + 60) - t then
rounds above 60 (60.00000000000006 on the windows py3.12 shard). Allow
that rounding instead of requiring an exact upper bound.
… aliases

Two ways the operation could report success and leave broken code:

- An override keeps its own defaults and the receiver is put back after
the new list is checked, so reordering `a, c, b` across
  `Base.f(self, a, b=1, c=2)` and `Sub.f(self, a, b, c=2)` wrote
  `def f(self, a, c=2, b)`, and a new `self=None` repeated the receiver.
Tree-sitter parses both. Each rewritten header now goes through the
compiler's symbol-table pass and is refused when Python would reject it.
- `from pkg.shapes import Base as base` made `base.f(obj, 5)` read as an
instance call, so the receiver bound to the first parameter and every
value shifted a slot. A name a `from` import binds is now read as the
name it imports before deciding whether the call goes through a class.

…p dropped calls

A genuinely new parameter shadows whatever the body read under that name:
adding `len=None` to `def f(a): return len(a)` made the body call the
parameter. The plan now refuses it, as it already did for a rename target.

A call site whose value for a dropped parameter runs code is left unmapped
instead of losing that code: `f(1, save())` no longer becomes `f(1)`.

Update: the CodeQL, OSV-Scanner and NuGet jobs each passed on their one re-run at 065bb97c. CI is green on that head (every job, plus All Checks Pass), SonarCloud's quality gate passed, and the branch still merges cleanly with main.

The original note follows.

Three checks failed on 065bb97c, and none of the failures came from this PR's code:

CodeQL / Analyze (python) and OSV-Scanner / scan-pr / osv-scan

  • Both scans ran to completion. CodeQL analysed 1846 of 1847 Python files and exported its SARIF. OSV-Scanner exited 0 and uploaded its artifacts.
  • Both jobs then failed in the same github/codeql-action "Uploading code scanning results" step, within two seconds of each other (14:28:43–45 UTC), and neither log gives an error message. The OSV job's ::error::Artifact upload failed line is only the follow-up message printed after that failed upload.
  • The diff doesn't touch either workflow. Main's CodeQL runs that day, and other PRs' runs from the same hour, uploaded fine.

Automatic Dependency Submission (NuGet) / submit-nuget

  • The component-detection binary that the action downloads failed to run (Syntax error: redirection unexpected). That means the download didn't return an executable, which is a tool-download failure. No scan of the code happened.
  • This PR ships no file by that name and touches no NuGet manifests.
